The Purple Hour of Strasbourg

Updated: Jun 17, 2019

It was 6pm when I started observing Strasbourg’s streets from the window nested under the roof of my friend’s place. As soon as the city was plunged into purple darkness, a cheerful surrounding ambiance sprung up from the bars, cafés and restaurants’ terraces. I could hear the talking, the gossip, the laughs but also heated debates around politics, all punctuated by cigarette puffs. Despite this noisy atmosphere, the slight tinkling of wine glasses in the background could still be grasped, standing for the melody of sweet Friday nights out.

The morning after, wandering around the neighbourhood of “La petite France” filled me up with joy as it reminded me of the Beauty and the Beast. The peaceful canal and the typical houses bordering it as well as the majestic cathedral embellishing the whole city center were depicting both a painting of the old France, and a trip to the fantasy world of Belle. Strasbourg’s beauty lies in its constant in-between. A city built as a pleasant mix of France and Germany, a perfect blend of the old and new times sprinkled with something magical. A single recipe that has helped Strasbourg maintain its loveliness throughout ages and will keep doing so for a long time.
