Marseille: Shades of Golden Blue

I remember wandering in the old Port of Marseille as if it were yesterday. The smell of bouillabaisse and other grilled fish mixed with the soft breeze of the Mediterranean sea were but one. How pleasant it was to breath the air of a city that has been flourishing for centuries. At the corner of every street, the rays of the sun were brightening yellowish buildings, all decorated with bloomed flowers, as well as red and green coloured shutters framing ancient windows. How magical it was to observe the poetry of such an ancient Phocéenne town.

I loved Marseille for that, for its constant effort to preserve the past while embracing the new. The blue of the sky was perfectly merging with the turquoise of the sea, and every modern building has been conceived in an effort to reflect these beautiful shades of Sapphire. Walking around the Mucem makes you feel like you are dancing along with gentle shadowy waves… Stepping close the shore makes your realize how charmingly hectic the sea truly is, as the crash of every wave energetically wrecks on cliff rock.

Not only is Marseille admirable for its closeness to the sea, but also for its splendid basilica, Notre-dame de la garde, which legend says is continuously protecting sailors and inhabitants. Its majestic statue of Marie is holding still and reigns as a golden protector. Leading to her, several gilded flowers, that I am sure owe their sparkle to the motherly symbol of Marseille.
